OBJECTIVE:
This course covers the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response, including CPR, to a casualty in a range of situations and is suitable for people in the workplace for members of the public from the wider community.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
The HLTAID003 Provide First Aid is recommended for anyone wanting to learn essential first aid skills, including CPR, and for those wanting a formal first aid certificate for work purposes. It is suitable for people in paid employment and members of the general community.
This course supersedes HLTFA311A, previously known as Senior First Aid or Apply First Aid.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING:

ESTIMATED DURATION:
We offer two delivery options for this course. Both options cover the same theory and practical components.
Option 1: approximately 12 hours including self-guided pre reading in your own time followed by 1 day practical training and assessment
Option 2: 2 days with theory test and learning guide completed in class along with practical assessment
EXPECTED MODES OF DELIVERY:
Option 1 – Pre-course reading + 1 day class based learning (approx. 12 hours)
For this shortened option, participants complete pre-reading of the Learner Guide and a knowledge based assessment questionnaire in their own time, prior to attending a one day face to face classroom based practical learning session. At the classroom based session, learners have the opportunity to ask any questions before spending the remainder of the day undertaking practical learning and assessment activities. We anticipate the pre reading and questionnaire will take approximately 4 hours, which is then followed by the one day class room based workshop which is 8 hours.
This option has a high self-guided reading component prior to commencing the class room based workshop.
To access this option, participants make full payment of the course fee on enrolment, thereafter the course notes and questionnaire will be emailed to you for completion. If you prefer a paper copy this can be posted or picked up from our office. Participants are required to complete the reading and questions and email/deliver back to our office for review by our assessor before the date of the face to face component of the course.
Option 2 – Two day classroom based learning (16 hours)
For this second option, learners participate in two full days of classroom based theory and practical learning activities. There is no requirement to complete reading or questions prior to the commencing the course. Each day is 8 hours duration.

Q. I did Senior First Aid a few years ago and have been involved in a few incidents at my work and I think I still remember everything. Can I apply for RPL?
A:You can apply for RPL if you believe that you already hold the required knowledge and skill to demonstrate competence in the unit, even if your old first aid certificate has expired. Contact our administration team to discuss evidence requirements and the suitability of an RPL pathway.
Q. I’m not currently working but I want to learn first aid to feel confident at home and when I’m out in the community. Is this course suitable for me or is it only for people in the workforce?
A. Both of our delivery options cover all theory and skills required to provide first aid including CPR in a workplace or community setting. Our trainer/assessor is a skilled facilitator with current industry skill and can contextualise the training and assessment activities to suit workplace or community settings depending on the needs of learners. All learners in this course must complete an incident report to be deemed competent in this unit regardless of whether they are in the workforce.
Q. I need a First Aid certificate for my new job interstate. Will this course be suitable?
A: HLTAID003 Provide First Aid is a nationally recognised course, which means that a Statement of Attainment in HLTAID003 Provide First Aid will be recognised anywhere in Australia.
Q. I did my first aid certificate last year and I only need the CPR certificate. Which course should I enrol in?
A. If your first aid certificate is current and it is only the CPR component that you need to qualify for, you may enrol in our HLTAID001 Provide CPR. Please contact our administration team for further information.

- Learning skills to work with first aid principles, monitor the casualty’s condition, recognise possible psychological impacts on others and conduct a visual assessment of the scene
- Reading and writing ability to following guidelines, complete the written test and report incidents
- English language ability to follow the instructions and prompts of the AED,
- Oral communication skills to seek assistance from emergency services, show respect to the casualty, obtain permission, participate in debriefing and conduct a verbal assessment, and
- Numerical ability to estimate safe weights for manual handling and to perform the correct ratio of CPR compressions to breaths for 2 minutes (5 cycles of 30:2).

- WA legislation, regulations, first aid codes of practice and workplace procedures
- Legal, workplace and community considerations
- Considerations when providing CPR and first aid
- Principles and procedures for first aid management in a range of scenarios
- Basic anatomy and physiology
Required skills:
Follow DRSABCD in line with ARC Guidelines including:
- Perform 2 min of CPR on adult and infant manikins
- Respond appropriately in the event of regurgitation and vomiting
- Manage an unconscious breathing casualty
- Follow single rescue procedure including a demonstration of a rotation of operators with minimal interruptions to compressions
- Follow prompts of an automated external defibrillator (AED)
- Respond to at least one simulated first aid scenario contextualised to the leaner’s workplace/community setting, including:
- Conducting a visual and verbal assessment of the casualty
- Demonstrating safe manual handling techniques
- Post-incident debrief and evaluation
- Providing an accurate verbal or written report
- Apply first aid procedures for the following:
- Allergic reaction
- Anaphylaxis
- Bleeding control
- Conking and airway obstruction
- Envenomation and pressure immobilisation
- Fractures, sprains, strains using arm slings, roller bandages or other appropriate immobilisation techniques
- Respiratory distress including asthma
- Shock
ASSESSMENT:
Leaners complete the following assessment activities:
- Theory knowledge test
- Performance of 6 simulated first aid/CPR scenarios including CPR on adult and infant manikins, the use of an AED on an adult, and a range of first aid treatments
- Completion of corresponding injury incident reports
- Participation in a debriefing and self-assessment

Students who successfully complete this course will be issued with a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment in HLTAID003 Provide first aid.
