OBJECTIVE:
This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to provide CPR to a casualty in line with the Australian Resuscitation Guidelines.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
The HLTAID001 Provide CPR course is for anyone seeking to learn the skills and knowledge required to perform CPR in line with the ACR Guidelines and applies to all workers who may be required to provide CPR in a range of situations including community and workplace settings. It is suitable for people in paid employment and members of the general community.
This course supersedes HLTCR211A Perform CPR.

To successfully complete this course you will need to possess a reasonable level of:
RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING:
Systems are in place for RPL pathways. Learners who already hold a current HLTAID001 qualification and are seeking refresher training prior to their 12 months expiry may apply for an RPL pathway. For more information contact TPS regarding eligibility.
ESTIMATED DURATION:
4.5 hours
EXPECTED MODES OF DELIVERY:
This course is conducted via a 4.5 hour face-to-face workshop in an off-the-job environment. Learners participate in class room based theory discussion, learning and assessment before undertaking practice opportunities followed by practical assessments.
All theory and practical learning and assessment activities are completed within the half-day workshop. There is no pre-reading or course work required.

Q. How long does the HLTAID001 Provide CPR certificate last?
A. The Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines recommend that HLTAID001 Provide CPR be re-qualified annually.
Q: I already have my HLTAID001 but it is about to expire. Do I need to do the full 4.5 hour course again or can I do a refresher?
A: You may apply for an RPL pathway if you hold HLTAID001 and it is still within the 12 month validity period. Contact our administration team to discuss evidence requirements and suitability of RPL.
Q. My CPR certificate has expired but I have been involved in a few incidents at my work and I think I still remember everything. Can I apply for RPL?
A:You can apply for RPL if you believe that you already hold the required knowledge and skill to demonstrate competence in the unit, even if your old CPR certificate has expired. Contact our administration team to discuss evidence requirements and the suitability of an RPL pathway.
Q. I’m not currently working but I want to learn CPR to feel confident at home and when I’m out in the community. Is this course suitable for me or is it only for people in the workforce?
A. Our 4.5 hour class based workshop covers all theory and skills required to preform CPR in a workplace or community setting. Our trainer/assessor is a skilled facilitator with current industry skill and can contextualise the training and assessment activities to suit workplace or community settings depending on the needs of learners. All learners in this course must complete an incident report to be deemed competent in this unit regardless of whether they are in the workforce.
Q. I need a CPR certificate for my new job interstate. Will this course be suitable?
A: HLTAID001 Provide CPR is a nationally recognised course, which means that a Statement of Attainment in HLTAID001 Provide CPR will be recognised anywhere in Australia.
Q. I need first aid as well as CPR. Does this course cover basic first aid?
A. No. This course occurs only covers CPR. If you would also like to learn basic first aid treatments then you can enrol in our HLTAID003 Provide first aid course, which covers CPR as well as first aid treatments.

- Learning skills to work with first aid principles, monitor the casualty’s condition, recognise possible psychological impacts on others and conduct a vidual assessment of the scene
- Reading and writing ability to following guidelines, complete the written test and report incidents
- English language ability to follow the instructions and prompts of the AED,
- Oral communication skills to seek assistance from emergency services, show respect to the casualty, obtain permission, participate in debriefing and conduct a verbal assessment
- Numerical ability to estimate safe weights for manual handling and to perform the correct ratio of CPR compressions to breaths for 2 minutes (5 cycles of 30:2).

- Privacy and confidentiality requirements
- Importance of debriefing
- Airway obstruction due to body position
- Appropriate duration and cessation of CPR
- Appropriate use of an AED
- Chain of survival
- Standard precautions
- How to recognise a person is not breathing normally
- Chest
- Response/consciousness
- Upper airway and effect of positional change.
Required skills:
Follow DRSABCD in line with ARC Guidelines including:
- Perform 2 min of CPR on adult and infant manikins
- Respond appropriately in the event of regurgitation and vomiting
- Manage an unconscious breathing casualty
- Follow single rescue procedure including a rotation of operators with minimal interruptions to compressions
- Follow prompts of an automated external defibrillator (AED)
- Respond to at least one simulated first aid scenario contextualised to the leaner’s workplace/community setting, including:
- Demonstrating safe manual handling techniques
- Providing an accurate verbal or written report.
ASSESSMENT:
Leaners complete the following assessment activities:
- Theory knowledge test
- Performance of 2 simulated first aid/CPR scenarios including CPR on adult and infant manikins, and the use of an AED on an adult
